City triumph in final Glasgow derby before split

By Stephen Bark
It was eleventh heaven for Glasgow City as they recorded their biggest win of the season against Glasgow Women at Petershill Park.

A double from both Lauren Davidson and Kinga Kozak along with strikes from Linda Motlhalo, Emily Whelan, Megan Foley, Miracle Porter, Priscila Chinchilla, Jenna Clark and Claire Walsh saw the league leaders run out 11-0 winners in the Glasgow derby.

In the final fixture before the split, City maintained their six-point lead at the top.

City made five changes from the side which defeated Celtic at the Excelsior last weekend with Lee Gibson, Hayley Lauder, Mairead Fulton, Chinchilla and Anna Oscarsson being replaced by Erin Clachers, Bea Prades, Motlhalo, Erin Greening and Porter who made her first start in City colours.

Early chances for Prades and Mothalo were thwarted before City broke the deadlock after 13 minutes. Davidson made the run down the right before playing the ball low across the box for Motlhalo to stroke home beyond Shannon Burgon.

Moments later it was two when a corner broke to Whelan and she turned it home in the melee.

There was almost a carbon-copy of Motlhalo’s goal but this time she put it over before Whelan headed a Prades cross.

It was then three and easy after great interplay between Kozak and Davidson saw the latter played through to curl the ball into the bottom corner for her 50th Glasgow City goal.

A Walsh thunderbolt from fully 30 yards was almost a fantastic fourth as cracked the crossbar but, despite questions over whether it cross the line, Kozak was there to follow up and make sure the ball did end up in the net.

Davidson added to City’s five-star performance when she popped up with her second of the half as she picked up the ball just outside the box and curled it over Burgon.

City made it six of the best before the break when Kozak’s ball across found Foley who took a touch before smashing the shoot beyond the goalie.

In the second half, it took less than two minutes for the hosts to extend their lead as a freekick found substitute Chinchilla who crossed for Porter at the far post to turn home and put City in seventh heaven.

It was almost eight when Motlhalo played in Chinchilla and she slipped it past Burgon but the flag was up for offside. In the move, Burgon had closed down Chinchilla and the players came together, injuring the Glasgow Women goalie who was unable to continue. With no sub goalkeeper, captain Charmaine McGuire filled in for the last 35 minutes.

It was eight just after the hour mark when Porter played in Whelan who was closed down but managed to set up Chinchilla who dinked the ball over the goalie.

City were on cloud nine after a corner broke to Clark who twisted and turned before prodding the ball home.

The perfect 10 came when a corner found Kozak free in the box and she fired the ball into the net for her second of the afternoon.

Walsh may have been denied earlier in the game but she did get her goal late on as Chinchilla laid the ball off for her to turn home following a corner.
