Seven Glasgow City players left the squad for international duty this week, with City midfielder Erin Cuthbert earning her first senior Scotland international call up.
The 17 year old attacking midfielder is one of five Glasgow City players selected with Gemma Fay, Leanne Ross, Jo Love and Hayley Lauder also named in Scotland boss Anna Signeul’s squad. Fay, Ross and Love
are the three highest capped players in the squad with an incredible total of 479 senior caps, so will not be short of advice to give the City youngster on how to handle the senior international set up.
Cuthbert has been ever present in Scott Booth’s midfield since he joined the club last summer and has been pivotal in City’s 100% start to this season’s campaign across all competitions. Commenting on making the squad, Erin said, “I’m delighted to be included in the squad. It will be a great experience for me and will grow me as a player. Being around professionals and national team players every day can only impact my development in a positive manner. I am looking forward to the two games and hopefully I and the rest of the girls can return to club action with a qualification place booked for Holland 2017.
Scotland will take on Iceland at home on Friday 3rd June, with the match a 7pm kick off at the Falkirk Stadium. The team will then travel to Belarus, with that match four days later on the 7th June. Six points for Scotland will pretty much secure their place at the European Championships next summer, the first time Scotland will ever have reached a major tournament at senior level in the women’s game.
Ireland are also in action this week and Glasgow City players Ruesha Littlejohn and Savannah McCarthy have both been named in Sue Ronan’s Republic of Ireland squad for their forthcoming UEFA Women’s European Championship’s Qualifying games versus Finland on3rd June 2016 and against Montenegro on 7th June 2016.
Good luck to all City players and to both Scotland and Ireland.
