City hit Inverness for 14 in League Cup

SWPL League Cup holders Glasgow City opened their domestic season in style with a football masterclass and a 14-0 thumping of Inverness to reach the Quarter Finals of the SWPL Cup.

Scott Booth's side showed their intent from the first whistle and recorded just short of 50 attempts at the Inverness goal in what was wholly one way traffic at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie.

Irish international Clare Shine netted a hat-trick and Jo Love, Ruesha Littlejohn, Sarah Crilly and Erin Cuthbert all secured doubles in this free scoring game. 16 year old Brogan Hay netted her first ever senior goal for the first team after signing from the City youth academy at the start of the new season and was joined by Scotland Under 19 international Carla Boyce on the scoresheet.

The biggest cheer of the day came with 15 minutes left to play when Fiona Brown came on as substitute after spending most of last season out with a knee injury and with virtually her second touch of the match showed Booth what she can bring to his side, when she cut inside and rifled a terrific curling shot into the corner of the net.

Commenting on the match, Scott Booth said, "I am delighted with the result today, but even happier with the performance. All the hard work the players have been putting in throughout pre-season was evident today. Some of the football was an absolute joy to watch."

City go into the hat for the quarter finals which will be drawn this week at Hampden.

The international break means City are not back in action until the 13th March when the travel to take on Stirling University in the first SWPL 1 match of the season. City's next home game is against Celtic on the 20th March at the Excelsior Stadium. Entry will be a cash gate, priced £5 adults and kids go free.
