It finished all square in City's first pre season friendly of the new season.
Sunderland were the visitors to the Excelsior stadium and boasted an impressive reputation after finishing 4th in the FA WSL 1 last season.
City looked sharp after their time off, passing the ball well and dominating most of the early possession. New signing Savannah McCarthy started at the back and look composed from start to finish, whilst other new signing Sam Kerr started on the bench.
City passed the ball well for much of the first half but the Sunderland defence held firm at the back. Clare Shine looked like the main threat for City as she burst through to be one on one with the 'keeper numerous times but her runs were flagged offside.
The best chance of the half came after Shine made an excellent run down the right wing before fizzing a cut back to Erin Cuthbert. However, she was only able to divert the ball wide of the post.
The second half started at a faster pace. Sunderland made three substitutions bringing on Olley, Holmes and Laws to replace Sjoman, Olsen and Pitman and they seemed to liven the game up.
City had a good chance to pull ahead as Docherty fired a ball in from the left but it eluded everyone and ran out of play. Sunderland then almost opened the scoring with the next attack. After a stramash in the box from a corner, Gemma Fay made an excellent double save from point blank range against Sunderland's Roche to keep the game tied.
There were then two big chances for City to take the lead. Firstly, Shine did excellently to force herself through with just the 'keeper to beat but her shot curled just round the far post. Then, minutes later, the ball fell to O'Sullivan's feet in the box. She did well to create enough space for the shot but it blazed wide of the net.
O'Sullivan continued to threaten the Sunderland defence with a few pacey runs down the wing but City couldn't quite break the deadlock. On the 65th minute, Brogan Hay was brought on to replace Sarah Clelland and she had an impact, showing good skill and quick feet to beat the defender before winning a corner.
Sunderland's only real chance fell to Lucy Staniforth who blasted a shot from 30 yards wide of the City net.
On the 77th minute, City made a triple substitution as Cuthbert was replaced by Sarah Crilly, Erin Clachers replaced Gemma Fay and Sam Kerr came on for Clare Shine. Minutes later, Kodie Hay also came on in place of O'Sullivan.
There were no more chances for either side but both teams will go home happy with a draw. City looked back to full fitness after their time off and will be eager to take on their next opponents, full of confidence.
