Glasgow City produced a fine display to thrash Hamilton Academical 12-0 this afternoon to remain top of the SWPL.
Leanne Ross grabbed the headlines with four goals and Abbi Grant and Susan Fairlie chipped in with a brace each. Clare Shine, Jo Love, Emma Black and Denise O’Sullivan also got their names on the scoresheet as the Scottish champions ran riot.
Hamilton were content to sit deep in an attempt to limit space and frustrate their higher ranked opponents but despite being well-organised and disciplined, they were under siege from the outset. City zipped the ball around with purpose, played with a high tempo and utilised their energetic full-backs - Black and Ross - to full effect.
The first goal arrived after 12 minutes. A smart passing move involving Fairlie and Black was eventually finished off on the volley by Grant. It was a sweet strike from the 19 year-old who made a perfect connection to give her side a deserved lead.
O’Sullivan came close to grabbing a second goal and Love and Shine both had efforts that drifted wide, however the second goal was imminent.
A long diagonal cross from Ross was headed into the far corner of the net by recent recruit, Shine, to double the advantage. Fairlie was then in the right place to tap the ball into the empty net after Hamilton goalkeeper, Elaine Fleming, had saved well from Shine: 3-0.
Ross, so often the architect, made it four with a terrific free-kick that curled over the defensive wall and beyond the helpless Fleming.
City’s goals were of a high standard and the fifth was no exception. Fairlie picked the ball up on the left side, cut inside and fired a thunderbolt shot that moved in the air before clipping the crossbar on its way into the net.
The one-way traffic continued in the second period and Love was thwarted by an excellent stop from Fleming, however she was not to be denied. Minutes later the Scotland internationalist finished off a wonderful team move with a quality strike from the edge of the box to make it 6-0.
The seventh goal quickly followed. O’Sullivan showed good control and a nice touch before combining well with Grant to set up Ross who had the simple task of stroking the ball into the unguarded net.
Black had an effort brilliantly tipped on to the bar by Fleming before capping another excellent display with a well-merited goal. Ross laid the ball into the path of the onrushing full-back who calmly stroked it home to make it 8-0 - and there were still twenty minutes left.
Grant, who commenced the scoring, made it nine with a fine strike from outside the box and Ross completed her hat-trick before tapping home a fourth. O’Sullivan made it a round dozen with the last meaningful kick of the game.
