City defeat Celtic 4-0 to reach SWPL Cup Final

Glasgow City progressed safely to the SWPL Cup Final for the fourth year in succession after a comfortable 4-0 win over Celtic thanks to goals from Hayley Lauder, Kerry Montgomery, Leanne Ross and Nicky Docherty.

It was pretty much one way traffic for the majority of the match, but City only had one goal to show for their territorial advantage at half time after Hayley Lauder volleyed City into the lead on 34 minutes. Rhonda Jones thought she had doubled her side's tally after heading home a corner kick, but Kerry Montgomery touched the ball just before it crossed the line and the goal was chopped off for offside.

In the second half, City continued to press the Celtic defence and McCulloch almost made it 2-0 but shot into the side netting after her initial effort was saved by Laura Hamilton in the Celtic nets. Montgomery shot from distance after a good City break, but her effort went wide, before Fiona Brown was next to find the net for City but once again the flag was up for offside.

City did finally get a deserved second goal on 62 minutes when Montgomery shot home from the edge of the box. Jo Love hit a powerful free kick on target which Hamilton did well to turn around the post as the pressure mounted on the Celtic defence and Abbi Grant perhaps should have scored after a great cut back from Lauder, but she fired over the bar when it looked a certain goal.

A third eventually arrived with 15 minutes remaining as second half substitute Erin Cuthbert, brilliantly set up Leanne Ross and the City Captain fired past Hamilton from 18 yards.

The icing on the cake for Glasgow City came two minutes later when full back Nicky Docherty scored the goal of the match with a powerful left foot drive from inside the box. It was a tremendous and unstoppable strike from the defender and no doubt a contender for goal of competition.

Commenting on the game, City Head Coach, Eddie Wolecki Black said, "First and foremost a big congratulations to everyone at the club on reaching another final. I did say that a full week's preparation for this game would make a difference and I believe that was the case today.

"Our win was fully merited and despite a competitive Celtic we kept full control of the game, scoring some excellent goals in the process. We now begin our work for our top of the table clash against Hibernian next week."

City will face Hibernian in the SWPL Cup Final on Wednesday 3rd June at Ainslie Park.
