Glasgow City fall to first defeat of pre-season

Glasgow City fell to their first defeat of pre-season after losing 3-2 to Manchester City at the City Academy, Manchester.

Hayley Lauder opened the scoring for the away side, curling a beautiful left foot shot into the top corner from the far edge of the box after Karen Bardsley in the Manchester goal had initially punched her corner clear.

The lead for the Scottish Champions lasted only 8 minutes as England and Manchester City Captain, Steph Houghton, pulled her side level with an exquisite free kick from 25 yards

Izzy Christiansen put the home side ahead on 27 minutes, firing home from inside the box, with the City defence guilty of being unable to clear a cross from the right hand side.

Glasgow City were back on level terms five minutes after the restart. A cross from Fiona Brown was adjudged to have been handled by the Manchester back line and Lauren McMurchie made no mistake from the penalty spot to make it 2-2.

The home side and FA Cup holders regained the lead on 77 minutes after a great individual goal from Nikita Parris. The England youth international cut inside from the left hand side, beating a number of players before firing past Megan Cunningham in the City nets.

Commenting on the match, Glasgow City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “The game was similar to last season’s match, when our opponents came on strongly in the second half. They passed the ball well and made us work across the pitch.  I believe the last 15 minutes of the game saw us struggle to get to the ball and this culminated in the winning goal being scored.  We will analyse today’s game and work on the aspects of the game we think are relevant.”
