We take on Slovakian Champions FC Union Nove Zamky tomorrow evening at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium for the first group game as hosts of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Qualification Group 4.
With only the winners of the four team group guaranteed to qualify for the last 32 of the competition, we will be aiming to get off to the perfect start and bag all three points. There is little room for error as Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black is well aware.
He said, “In the past we have found to our cost that it is vital to take something from the first game in the group. We are well aware that Slovakians are now in their second European campaign and will be a better team for last year’s experience. I believe this is a dangerous game for us and a look at their run of form would back that up. They last suffered defeat in their first ever Champions League game last year against Apollon by a scoreline of 2-0. They went on to finish runners up in the group. Therefore as not only Champions of Slovakia but also Slovakian Cup winners they come into the tie with an established winning style of play. They have a mixture of nationalities in their squad and from the footage we have seen of them they look dangerous from set plays. Of course we are top seeds and expected to win the group. As a squad we are not fazed by that as it is a tag we carry on a weekly basis. I am hoping we can have a vociferous home support to cheer us on to victory not only in this game but in every match.”
