Glasgow City extended their SWPL advantage to 15 points clear, with a 2-1 win over Rangers at windy Petershill Park.
Rangers took the lead on 36 minutes, when a shot from Erin Cuthbert took a deflection and outwitted City keeper Niki Deiter. Within 60 seconds, City were back on level terms as Fiona Brown netted at the near post following an Emma Black cross.
City hit the post through Morgan Marlborough before Captain Black popped up on 68 minutes to score the winner as her shot went in off the post after she broke into the box to reach a well-timed Suzanne Lappin pass.
Commenting on the win, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “This is always the tough ones to play because this game was getting in the way. We have experienced it in the past when everyone’s eyes are fixed on the Champions League. But we had to respect the league and we put out a strong side and whilst it wasn’t a free flowing performance we certainly battled and made sure we got the 3 points. What is particularly pleasing is that as Champions even although we didn’t play well, we still ground out the win, and after having already won the title that is testament to the players. All attention now turns to our Champions League game on Wednesday.”
Glasgow City take on Medyk Konin in Poland this Wednesday in the last 32 of the Champions League. The return leg is one week later on Wednesday 15th October, 7.30pm at Airdrie Excelsior Stadium. Entry is £5 adults, £2 kids. You can buy your tickets here http://www.glasgowcityfc.co.uk/tickets/
