Glasgow City last night became 2014 SWPL Champions with three games remaining after Rangers were defeated by Spartans leaving City 12 points clear at the top of the table and unable to be caught.

City have now won an amazing eight SWPL titles in a row and having already lifted the League Cup and in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, a third straight treble cannot be ruled out. Most importantly for the Champions, they have the knock out round of last 32 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League to contend with next week when they head off to Poland to face Polish Champions Medyk Konin.

It has been well documented how hard City have been hit with injuries this year, with no fewer than 4 internationalists sidelined all season and Julia Scott absent through pregnancy. Influential Captain and Scotland internationalist Leanne Ross has also been out since August, and City Head Coach, Eddie Wolecki Black is without question certain this season’s title has been a magnificent team effort.

He said, “Firstly I have to congratulate everyone at the club. We did not win this title with 11 players we won this with many people making vital contributions. There is no doubt that it has been a difficult season but when you add the League title to the League Cup then it is a very good season. However we are in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup and last 32 of Champions League therefore everyone at the club knows we can still make this a fantastic season. With such a heavy schedule there is barely time to celebrate but it does not stop me from acknowledging a remarkable achievement. To win one title is difficult to win eight in a row is truly historic.”

Glasgow City will lift the SWPL trophy at their next home game versus Hibernian on Sunday 12th October at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium, 2.30pm. City face Medyk Konin in the 2nd leg home match of the Champions League on 15th October, 7.30pm at the Excelsior Stadium. Tickets are £5 adults, £2 kids and available at www.glasgowcityfc.co.uk.
