A brace from Lauren Davidson helped Glasgow City maintain their three-point lead at the top of the SWPL with a comfortable 3-0 win over Motherwell.

Emily Whelan gave City the lead before the SWPL’s top scorer added another two to her tally to leave her overall City tally at 49 goals.

City made three changes from the win against Aberdeen on Sunday with Lee Gibson, Beatrix Prades and Priscilla Chinchilla replacing Erin Clachers, Amy Muir and Mairead Fulton.

The hosts started well and tested Emily Mutch in the Motherwell goal early as a Jenna Clark header from a corner was turned round the post.

A freekick on 16 minutes saw Whelan cut the ball back to Clark but her shot was blocked before Davidson curled a shot just wide from the edge of the area.

Another fine save from Mutch denied Kinga Kozak after the ball broke to the Poland international just outside the box.

On 27 minutes the deadlock was broken as Davidson picked up the ball on the right and her cross found Whelan in the six-yard box for a tap in.

Anna Oscarsson’s hard work saw City win possession back in an advanced area and Kozak played her through but Oscarsson’s shot was blocked.

Motherwell’s best chances came from range as Lucy Ronald and Louisa Boyes forced saves from Lee Gibson.

However, City doubled their lead when Claire Walsh’s cross-field pass found Davidson who fired home from a tight angle.

Davidson’s cross then found Whelan who had the chance to add to her tally as she turned but shot wide of Mutch’s goal.

Chinchilla nearly caught out the goalie as her cross from the left floated towards the far corner of the net but Mutch punched clear. However, the ball broke to Linda Motlhalo whose snapshot was well saved.

Whelan then played the ball across for Kozak as she tried to turn provider but Kozak’s shot on the turn flew wide of goal.

If there were any lingering doubts that the points would be staying in Glasgow, City extinguished them with 17 minutes left. Whelan drove to the byline before cutting back for Davidson who thumped the ball home.
