City stay five clear with dominant victory

Glasgow City kept their five lead at the top of the SWPL with a dominant 3-0 win over Hearts this afternoon at Petershill.

Goals from Claire Walsh (18), Linda Motlhalo (61) and Lauren Davidson (68) secured the win on a sunny afternoon in Glasgow.

Head coach Leanne Ross introduced Motlhalo to the starting XI in the only change to City's 2-1 win over Hibernian on Wednesday.

A quiet open period saw the first chance of the game fall to Lauren Davidson, who fired narrowly wide after a lovely through ball from Emily Whelan.

Hearts managed to keep City at bay 10 minutes later when an excellent Mairead Fulton corner was met by Walsh and Charlotte Parker-Smith pulled off an outstanding save and before Anna Oscarsson's rebound was somehow blocked on the line.

There was no stopping City seconds later though when Walsh connected well to a loose ball from a corner to blast home into the left corner.

It would be City who would continue to be in the ascendancy to with both Fulton and Jenna Clark going close before the close of the first period.

Early in the second period, good running from Whelan saw her burst into the box but felled by Brownlie - there were calls for a penalty but the referee would wave play on.

And Hearts would go down to ten players moments later when Jennifer Smith caught Clark in the face with high boot. As Clark received treatment, Smith was given her marching orders.

City would double their lead with a stunning strike just after the half mark when South Africa international Motlhalo drilled home from 25-yards to leave the Jambos goalkeeper with no chance. A goal mouth scramble would then be finished by top scorer Davidson, who grabbed her 28th goal of the season.

Late on Lisa Forrest almost added a screamer of a fourth when she connected to Clark's excellent knock down but in the end City had to be content with just the three as they moved five points clear at the top.
